Basically it is the typical "hook latch" system, but the key to opening it is a magnetic key. the key is sort of like the top of a milk carton--round and about that size. You hold the key to the front of your cabinet where you installed the lock and it releases the latch. The key then goes back onto a round "holder" that you install out of a kids reach and well within your reach. The holder is just a piece of metal so replacing the key just means touching the holder. It is certainly easier than fishing around of a press type release and holding it down while you open the cabinet or messing with those cabinet locks that you have to unscrew and separate. It also keeps the cabinet totally closed so you don't have a kids slightly opening a cabinet and then seeing how loud they can slam it--not that your angel would do such a thing.
